A Sense of Place 2-4-1 Special

If you enjoy Patrick Smith’s novels, you will love the film, Patrick Smith’s Florida: A Sense of Place.

My father used to be really big on the lecture circuit. He was a natural storyteller and was invited all over Florida – and in the Soviet Union too, for that matter. From very wealthy country clubs to small libraries, at festivals and conferences, he was highly sought out. He even spoke at the governor’s mansion! (Now, that’s a story I hope to share soon.)

Audiences were mesmerized by his accounts of early Florida and the adventures he had researching and writing his books. He normally ended his talk by taking people on a nostalgic journey to a Florida that exists today only in books, such as in his beloved novel, A Land Remembered.

How the Film Came About

I live in California and in the mid-1990s, when I would visit him, he started to tell me, “I bet if you made a movie of my talk, you’ll sell thousands.” As a professional video producer, of course, I accepted that challenge. So on one of those visits, I sat him down in his screened-in porch and he shared his talk while I filmed him. He did it in one take!

Then my wife, Kim, and I spent the next few years; going to Florida following his footsteps shooting supporting footage, spending hours researching archival photos, and taking months editing until we got it just right. I’m happy to say that what we came up with is a loving tribute to my father, one that won many awards.

What I love the best, and others have shared that they do too, is that it’s as if he is sitting in your living room talking to you about writing his books and telling you his wonderful stories.

“Loved the DVD ‘A Sense of Place.’ Now, I will be purchasing your books for my husband as a gift for his birthday in March. Thank you so much for all that you have done on educating all of us about Florida. What a wonderful treat for all!”~ Pamela Morrow, Flagler Beach

Synopsis

You’ll spend an hour with Patrick D. Smith. Along the way, you’ll get to know both him and the state of Florida better as this soft-spoken gentleman introduces you to the Florida of his youth. You’ll be touched by the true stories of his adventures while writing his books, many of which are now modern-day classics. Video, historical photos, and re-enacted scenes bring his stories to life. This is a film the entire family will enjoy. It makes a wonderful gift for anyone who lives in or loves Florida.

Final Thoughts

So have I sold hundreds? I’m happy to report that I have sold thousands of DVDs and shown parts of this film in my more than 350 shows in Florida. Making this film changed my life as I found myself also on the speaking circuit throughout Florida after I started selling this DVD through my websites. When Dad no longer could attend speaking engagements, I was asked to do it. I happily took up that challenge too. Unfortunately, I have also retired from speaking but you can still enjoy my dad’s fascinating stories of his life and adventures; experiences that he had to have to write his books the way he did.
