Food Ideas
Add to the fun with a themed meal based on A Land Remembered.
Here are some food ideas for you:
- Swamp cabbage (hearts of palm) In Florida, they boil it up as a stew (check out this swamp cabbage recipe I found on the FoodNetwork.com). Or serve a salad with hearts of palm added to the mix.
- Gator bites – Made from real alligator. Be brave! If you can’t find it in your local grocery store, you can find these Country Boy Gator Breaded Alligator Nuggets on Amazon or get Florida Alligator Tail Meat and make your own with this recipe from JuliasSimplySouthern.com. Or serve chicken and call them gator nuggets.
- Indian fry bread
- Brunswick stew A spicy southern stew made with. You could say it’s possum or squirrel stew to make it fun! Here’s a simple recipe from SpiceSouthernKitchen to try.
- Corn pone (cornbread)
- Greens Boiled collard greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens. If you can’t find that, spinach and kale are good to serve instead.
- Sweet tea
- Cracker coffee Very strong, boiled Chicory coffee

Themed Decorations
A small treasure chest or trunk filled with “gold” doubloons (gold chocolate covered coins). Or buy pirate coin replicas from Amazon.
On the serving table, display bowls of oranges.
Add some cow figurines tucked among tiny bales of hay you can get at craft stores.
